At Tuva OIS, children solve real world problems!
Children often complain that they find learning some topics boring and pointless. That’s because schools fail to connect theory with practice. Tuva’s weekend school bridges this gap by helping children solve real world problems!
Unlike textbook problems, solving real world problems is…
… thrilling!
Let’s face it! Textbook problems are boring! For example, children are often asked in schools to group common materials based on their strength, density or some such aspect. Who’d enjoy that?
At Tuva, we teach students about materials and their properties by asking them to choose the right materials to be mixed together to form an alloy for a spacecraft!
… relevant!
We all know about that one ‘ideal’ balanced diet. But who follows that diet, anyway? Not the athlete who needs more calories. Not the diabetic who can’t eat much sugar. Not the IT worker who does very little physical activity.
Textbook problems are boring, because their solutions pleases no one other than teachers. In contrast, solutions to real world problems are indeed useful to people.
… challenging!
It’s easy to solve textbook problems. Just plug values into the formula, and boom, you have the answer. Of course, engineers don’t get paid to do that, right?
Professionals solve problems that are far more complex, and use 21st century skills to solve these problems - critical thinking, creativity, data analysis, and so on. Solving real world problems prepares children for the real world!
Samples of Student Work
Above is a presentation designed and developed from scratch by a grade 3 student enrolled in Tuva OIS. Check out how the child uses graphs and charts to select an appropriate dog breed for the family in consideration. Also notice how the child is being encouraged to put to use his understanding of various ‘attributes’ of animals like weight, ability to survive in different climates, etc.
Above is a presentation designed and developed from scratch by a grade 6 student enrolled in Tuva OIS. Check out how the child has built a diet plan for a diabetic person keeping various medical concerns in mind, and by proposing evidences to back his position. Also notice how this deeply connects to the curriculum, bringing in aspects of food science and health & diseases.
